Celebration Cakes: The Ultimate Guide

Whether you’re marking a milestone or a birthday, surviving another year, or celebrating something wonderfully ordinary, a celebration cake says it all.

Celebration cakes can be simple single tier cakes for small gatherings or multi tier cakes that everyone crowds around for the photo dump opportunity. The magic happens in the design, decoration, and personalisation - and that’s where we thrive.

We’re diving into everything celebration cakes - why they matter, why they’re loved, the occasions people really order them for, how to pick the right style (and flavour), and loads of inspo for your next order.

Why celebration cakes matter

Cakes are more than sugar and sponge. They do three big things:

  1. Mark the moment of making it out of the group chat - whether it’s a 1st birthday, bridal shower or a 70th.

  2. They bring people together - no one gathers for salad. End of.

  3. They make memories look cute - especially when your cake has personality like vintage piping, unhinged messages, or colours that match your outfit or invite.

Birthdays

Classic but never boring, birthday cakes are the OG celebration cake. Whether it’s a pastel vintage design, a bold splash of colour, a printed cake with your fave celeb on top or an unhinged message on a cake (like ones you’ve seen blow up on our socials), birthdays are made for customisation.

Weddings & Engagements

While weddings cakes often get their own category (and deserve it), celebration cakes can also extend to anniversaries, engagement parties, and wedding after-parties. Either way, it’s a sweet symbol of “we did a thing”. Some couples prefer a traditional tiered cake, while others pick a smaller cake, which is ideal for an engagement party or for their rehearsal dinner or bridal shower. Graduations

Caps, gowns, future plans - graduation cakes are a wonderful way to mark academic achievement. Tip: Top it with school colours, symbols of study, or a message that says “I did it!” louder than the ceremony did.

Baby Showers & Gender Reveals

For sweet beginnings, we usually get people asking for baby shower cakes that are soft, dreamy, and full of anticipation. Perfect for pastel palettes, whispery decorations, or subtle colours that match the theme (no spoilers unless you want to spill tea). We even get sent the gender of babies to add colours to a gender reveal cake if you want to keep it a complete secret and find out with everyone you love on the day of your gender reveal party.

Anniversaries

Whether it’s a silver wedding anniversary or ten years in business, anniversary cakes tend to be a bit more refined, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be playful. Personal touches like dates, flowers, or symbols from the relationship go a long way. Sometimes the cake can even reflect the couple’s story: where they met, favourite shared hobbies, or meaningful colours.

Achievement & Milestone Cakes

Promotion? Retirement? First house? Marathon finished? No matter the occasion, celebration cakes turn achievements into shared moments. These are often less traditional and more expressive, perfect for showing personality.

How to pick the right celebration cake

Choosing a cake isn’t just about flavour (although that’s a big deal). Think of it as part practical, part creative.

Here’s how to go about it:

  • Think about the occasion, the vibe. Is it formal, fun, chaotic, understated? The design tells the story. You can also give our founder, Jen full creative freedom to come up with the design.

  • Pick flavours people actually love. Vicky sponge and chocolate classics are timeless, but lemon and chocolate orange are actually one of the most requested flavours.

  • Customise your message, a personalised phrase or name on top turns a cake into a core memory.

Choose the right size. The number of guests matters. You don’t want any of them staring longingly at the empty plate. We know what you’re thinking: what size cake do I need for XYZ number of people? Well, we make it easy, when you order a cake from us, select any cake size and it will tell you how many people that size feeds. You can also check out our FAQs for a cake-cutting guide.
